Photos & layout from April 2007, when we all went out on Folsom lake in my parents' OLD boat :)

blogging for hope in the dominican republic

I started Project Life this year because I enjoyed seeing what others had done with Project 365 last year. Shortly afterwards, I came across this blog by Jessica Turner, an absolutely amazing woman. She's on her way (soon) to the Domincan Republic with World Vision. She's asking her readers to post this button right now to share what she's doing.

A Week in the Life, day two

I’ve made it thru two days now…

Today I went to work. I work two days a week in a local school district as an SLP. My husband gets the kids ready in the morning, so I left a camera with him. Then my mom comes to get them (she lives just a few miles away), and to bring my middle child to school. So the camera went with them. I told my kids they could take some pictures today with it…oh boy…

That was a great idea! I got so many awesome pics from my kids’ perpectives. Even if you aren’t doing a project like this, I highly recommend it. All the photos below (except the one they're all in...thanks David!) were taken by them. My photos are all taken in RAW mode & I don't feel like converting them to jpeg at the moment.

Onto what I’m using, besides my camera.
  • Ali Edwards’ Week in the Life layered template album: I’m doing a hybrid book. Digital templates for photos (that I can re-use for other projects), plus patterned paper to make it have more dimension.
  • I might also get the journal cards, but I’m waiting until I start putting this together. The digi-kit has some in it, but I’m not exactly sure which & how.
  • baseball card 9-up page protectors
  • this cute lime green album from We R Memory Keepers
  • fun, already coordinated, springy patterned papers from my Green Tangerine’s March kit

Project LIFE, 4/18 - 4/24

\
Abbie loves to talk on the phone! She found our old red Pottery Barn phone out in the family room (while we were moving stuff around) and starting chatting.

Wii time with Daddy.

Tonight I had to get all of the documents together for Brandon's kindergarten registration. Tomorrow we'll go to Maidu Elementary to get it all turned in. Sniff.

Happy 4th Birthday my dear sweet Olivia!

Lovin' her lunch! Trader Giotto's Quattro Formagio pizza & strawberries while watch Nick Jr.

Olivia was showing me how fast she could ride round & round in the driveway. Both kids love their bikes they got for their birthdays this year. Olivia's even came with a bike for Barbie (it is a Barbie bike).

We celebrated Olivia's birthday party today with her girlfriends from school. We all had a great time going on a treasure hunt for strawberry candy (Thank you Brenda for that great idea! Everyone LOVED it!), making suncatchers, eating strawberries, and my sister's delicious strawberry cupcakes. Divine.

A week in our life, day one

My grandfather passed away just over 11 years ago. Right before he died, my family was at my grandparents' house, cleaning out 35 years of memories. While we were doing that, we came upon boxes of photos. In one of those boxes was a photo my great-grandfather took while aboard ship (in the Navy) of a casket being lowered onto the main deck. I love that photo, and it bothers me to this day I didn't just put it in my pocket right then & there. Because no one knows what happened to that photo (it's probably in a box in a garage at my uncle's!). Nor do they believe that it exists.

Why has it stuck with me all these years?

Because it told a story.

A story of my great-grandfather's life that I had no other way of knowing. He died when my mother was two, long before I was even dreamed about. I love that he took the time to document that moment, back before everything was digital & it was cool to say you took 199 decent photos in one day.

And a story about how photography is in my blood. Which, I'll be honest, means more to me than the story in that photo. I love that I feel this kinship with a man I never knew because we both felt the need to document our lives for future generations.

When I started reading about Ali Edwards "A Week in the Life" I knew I had to do it. Sure, I take photos of LOTS of things. But I wanted a reason to share what our life is like in 2010 to my grandchildren. I want them to be able to look back & know what it felt like to find that old photo of a casket being lowered aboard ship.

So I took 199 photos today.

Some were of us doing our normal routine. Some were of things around the house. And plenty were taken by my daughter in the backseat of my car!

My focus this week is on taking pictures, collecting receipts & tags & other things that are from our day, editing thru some of it nightly, and getting it written down. A box of goodies arrived from twopeasinabucket.com today, and I finally picked up a pack of 30 baseball card holder pages from Target for $4.99, so I'm good to go!

Tomorrow I'll talk about the supplies I'm using. I'll leave you with a few of my faves from the day:

Let's Play Ball!

Brandon had his first T-ball game almost a month ago & I finally finished the layout! I actually had bought some American Crafts paper for it about three months ago, but I couldn't make it work to my liking for this sketch. I could've reprinted the photos & chosen another sketch, but I decided to use those papers for another layout. It's not like I don't ever take any photos of his games!

So I chose to use some goodies I had leftover from my February kit. The colors worked out great! I was also able to use some brown puffy thickers I had in my stash, and some cool epoxy baseball stickers I've had a LONG time! I think they might be Karen Foster? I used them on this layout that I did sometime in 2007-ish.

Digi layouts :)

So tonight I did my very first ALL digital layouts ever, and it was SO MUCH FUN! Sorry for the all caps, but I'm absolutely giddy right now :)

I've been a mostly paper/hybrid scrapper for the last few years. I do mostly paper layouts, but I do use Photoshop Elements to resize my photos, add text or embellishments, and to print photo collages. Heck, I even "sketch" my layouts digitally so I can reuse the template for my photos.

But I digress.

About a month ago, I found this cool school album idea on Cathy Zielske's blog. I knew in my head what I wanted my kids' school years albums to look like, so when I saw her take on it I was thrilled. Everything is laid out for me so I just have to plunk some photos in & add a little bit of journaling. Woo-hoo! I mean, I love scrapbooking, but I have three kids & time is precious. And sometimes it's really nice to have everything done for me. Heck, I made these pages in just a hour or so tonight:

To say I'm thrilled is an understatement! For anyone who cares, you can get everything I used at Designer Digitals.

School Layered Template Set, 12x12 (also comes in 8 1/2 x 11) by Cathy Zielske
(I also got the School Album Add-Ons Pack Brushes and Stamps. The Layered Template set includes Preschool thru Sixth Grade, the add-on is for seventh thru twelth.)

Happy Birthday

Happy birthday, Olivia. I can't believe you're four years old now. It seems like it wasn't that long ago that I first held you in my arms & marveled at your gorgeous turquoise eyes & red hair. Of course the turquoise eyes are long gone, but you still have the most beautiful hair I have ever seen.

I have loved watching you grow into such a fun little girl from that sweet little baby. You seem so mature for your age at times, but then something will happen to upset you & it reminds me that you're still little and need your mommy. Sigh. I know it won't be that way for much longer.

I love how you constantly feel the need to interrupt me just to tell me, "you know...I love you." I won't lie, it can be downright annoying at times! But I tell myself that (sadly) there will be a day, all too soon, when you will be telling me something quite the opposite! And there are plenty of other mothers out there who would give anything to be interrupted just to hear "I love you." So rather than be annoyed at you for interrupting, I cherish your sweetness.

I love how determined you are to do anything Brandon can do even better! You are, and always have been, my little Annie Oakley. I don't appreciate how you rub it in to him, but that's what being a little sister is all about. You love to practice your handwriting & are so proud that you know how to spell your name out loud. One of your favorite things to do is your "homework." You sit for great lengths of time writing letters over & over & over until they are perfect. You have us write lots of words on paper for you to trace & then write on your own. Just yesterday I found a paper you'd written some words on & for a moment I thought it was something an adult had written.

Lately, you've gotten a new friend, Samantha. She's eight & loves to play school and dress up with you and have fashion shows. You LOVE to dress up & do make-up. I can't believe that I already have to tell you how much make-up you can wear to school! Fortunately, you're usually content to wear moisturizer & chapstick.

You also love to go shopping & have "girls' days". I have so much fun shopping with you! It's fun to pick out clothes & try them on, and get your make-up done at the Bobbi Brown counter. It reminds me of when I was little.

And even though you enjoy "big girl" activities, you still love to play with dolls. It's fun to play Barbies with you & remember how much fun I had playing when I was a little girl.

So, cheers to you, Olivia. Happy 4th birthday!

Project LIFE, 4/11-4/17

Our grocery store at the corner of Douglas & Sierra College in Roseville.

Shopping at Safeway with Olivia.
(And I just noticed that my two "make-up" pictures are of Safeway!)

Our new favorite snack: Organic Z-Bars.

Rain, rain, go away...I know we need it, but come on! It's mid-April & I'm ready for some sunny spring weather before the heat of summer is upon us.

An indoor picnic lunch at Mama & Papa's house.

My cell phone, an LG Chocolate from Verizon. I'm hoping to get an i-phone soon; I've had this one for just over two years.

Olivia at Tricks for her ballet/tap class. She just started in February & LOVES it! Her teacher is Miss Alyssa.

Brandon & Olivia on the computer, making Blue's Clues pictures to print and put up on their bedroom walls. They made other ones the other day at my parents', but decided they needed to make more.

Our slide. We got it three years ago for Brandon's 2nd & Olivia's 1st birthday. Mostly it's a way up to the trampoline, but it also makes a great fort! Best buy ever :)

Project LIFE, 4/4 - 4/10

Happy Easter! Unfortunately, I got a not-so-fun case of the stomach flu, so I'm very thankful I got a few pics of the kids hunting for eggs at my parents' house. Needless to say, I didn't get any photos of us together :(  I'm hoping that since the weather is supposed to be getting nicer (it was in the 50's for Easter), I can get a nice pic of the kids outside in their Easter clothes soon!

Abbie, enjoying a moment at the easel while Brandon & Olivia were at the movies (How to Train a Dragon).

We took a trip over to our "local farmer's market" since I had the day off for spring break. Brandon loves to go & get fresh produce...I guess I've trained him well! :)

Making strawberry sorbet with Mama.

I love having little girls who love to dress up like princesses! Abbie brought this to me to put on her while Olivia was at school this morning :)

A sweet kiss from Abbie to Daddy.
